The Game of Mason Langston Hemsley
First Quarter – Early Life Mason Langston Hemsley, was born March 10, 2001, in Columbus, Ohio, to Shon L. Hemsley and Michael L. Glover, and departed this life on September 13, 2025, at the age of 24.
From the start, Mason brought energy, joy, and love to everyone around him. He attended Higher Peaks Learning Academy, WC Cupe Community School, and Harambee Christian School before moving with his family to Durham, NC. As a child, Mason and his brothers played football, basketball, baseball, and golf — excelling in every sport they touched.
Second Quarter – Growth and Achievement The game picked up momentum as Mason entered middle and high school. He graduated from Voyager Academy High School in 2019, where he played on both the junior varsity and varsity basketball teams. His talent on the court was matched only by his drive off the court. While attending high school, Mason’s first job was at Chick-fil-A where he worked side-by-side with his brother, Montgomery — learning the value of hard work and responsibility. Mason then went on to become a valet for a local hotel.
In 2012, Mason and his brothers joined Boy Scouts of America Troop 411 at Union Baptist Church. As a Boy Scout, Mason was elected Patrol Leader and also served as Troop Historian, Troop Scribe, and Den Chief. His leadership and dedication earned him election into the Order of the Arrow, and ultimately, he achieved the rank of Eagle Scout — the highest honor in Scouting.
His second quarter was about growth, responsibility, and learning to lead, both on and off the court.
Third Quarter – Adulthood and Purpose After high school, Mason kept the scoreboard running. He began his career with BMW of Southpoint – Hendrick Automotive, where he started as a transporter and, through hard work and determination, advanced to the role of Assistant Service Manager. Over nearly five years, Mason’s leadership and commitment earned him multiple accolades including the company’s 2022 “Star Performer”. In 2025, Mason took on more responsibility when he became the Assistant Manager at Jiffy Lube.
He built lasting friendships everywhere he went — at work, the YMCA, and church. When his older siblings, Meghan and Montgomery, moved from North Carolina, Mason naturally stepped into the role of “Big Brother.” He looked after his mother and younger brothers with love and care, always making sure they were supported. Some of his favorite moments were spent with his dad and brothers watching football and basketball. He took immense pride in supporting his younger brother, Malone, through his academic achievements and cheering on his youngest brother, McKinley, as he thrived on the basketball court. Mason had a love for cars, with his cherished 4-Runner being a standout favorite.
Mason’s third quarter was marked by family, faith, and finding his rhythm in life.
Fourth Quarter – Legacy Mason’s final quarter came too soon, ending on September 13, 2025, at the age of 24. But like every great player, his legacy is bigger than the clock. He was known as a comedian, a protector, a reliable friend, and someone who loved deeply. If you got to know Mason, you loved him. His presence was larger than life, his laughter unforgettable, and his love for family and friends undeniable.
Mason is survived by his mother, Shon L. Hemsley; father, Michael L. Though the buzzer sounded too early, Mason leaves the court a champion. He gave his all — in love, laughter, faith, and family — and his spirit will live on in the hearts of everyone who was blessed to share the game of life with him.
