Lois Jean Godwin Wilkins

Lois Jean Godwin Wilkins, 93, of Durham, North Carolina, passed away peacefully at her home on August 31, 2026.

Lois grew up in Johnston County, North Carolina, and was lovingly known by many as “Mee-maw.” Lois worked as a telephone operator for General Telephone then for Verizon. She retired after 50 years of service.She was a strong, spirited woman with a personality that was impossible to forget. She loved her family fiercely, and her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were among the greatest joys of her life.

Mee-maw loved Duke University, the colors pink and purple, flowers, and the beauty of fall. She was known for speaking her mind, making people laugh, and making sure those she loved always knew just how much they meant to her.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband, James Clinton “JC” Wilkins (Tink), Her parents, Lena Strickland Godwin and John Ralph Godwin, Brothers Gerald and Jimmy Godwin, Sister, Joanne Godwin Pope, and her granddaughter, Britney Renee Rigsbee.

She is survived by her daughter, Wilma “Joy” Vollers (Johnny Morris Vollers); son, Eric Dan Wilkins; grandchildren, Dana Wilkins, Brad Vollers (Morgan Vollers), Dylan Wilkins (Nikki Browning); great-grandchildren, Lillie, Addy, Kaydence, Bentleigh, Aliyah, Lyric, Marissa, and Remi, siblings-Betty Norris, Ruth Strickland, and Bud Godwin, and caregiver -Pat Wilkins. As well as many nieces and nephews.

Lois will be deeply missed and forever remembered by the family she loved so dearly.

A Celebration of Life will be held Sunday, September 13, 2026, from 1:00 p.m.–3:00 p.m. Service starts at 1pm fellowship & refreshments to follow. Service held at: Still Waters Retreat, 321 Bivins Road, Hillsborough, North Carolina.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests considering donation in Lois Wilkins name to Bethany  United Methodist Church, The American Cancer Society, or American Heart Society.
