John Rogers

June 6, 1973 — January 16, 2025

On June 6, 1973 at 2:48 p.m. Sharon and the late John Pressley Rogers welcomed into the world their first and only son, John Tarae Rogers. Lovingly known by most as Tarae. Tarae was raised in Jamaica New York, and attended New York City public schools.

Seventeen months after welcoming Tarae, Sharon and John gave him a sister LaKeshia Nicole Mills. Keshia and Tarae where very close, practically twins. She gave Tarae two nieces Shadai and Philise and a nephew Dilou Mills . Unfortunately they’ve all proceeded him in death. .

Thirteen years after Tarae’s birth Sharon gave him another sister Laurean Robinson, by Tommy Robinson. To Laurean Tarae played many roles, at times he played a father figure, a protector, provider, friend and overall the best big brother a girl could ask for. Laurean gave Tarae one nephew LeRyan Ishmael Scarlett jr who he lovingly called LJ.

In 1995 Tarae migrated to Durham N.C. where he met Sherry Smith. Tarae and Sherry had four children. Whitney Rogers who blessed them with his first grandson Tahir Rogers, Psikwuan Rogers who blessed them with two grandsons, Jordan Satterfield and Niko Rogers. Twin girls Kymora and Kymia Rogers. Unfortunately Kymia proceeded him in passing. Tarae was especially proud of his babygirl Kymora who he lovingly called “Moomoo” or “Daddies Baby” for graduating high school early and going to college. She’s always been such a daddies girl. Tarae also welcomed into his life his two honorable grand children DaMya and Damone Morales, and his god daughter J’Nayia “Nani Jenkins” Farrington. Watching the achievements of the many children who he played an active role in their lives was a highlight of his life.

Tarae lived the majority of his life in Durham N.C. where he was known, loved and respected by OGG (which was affectionately given to him by his late aunt Betty Wells) or O1. In Durham Tarae was introduced by his ex wife Sherry to her family, the Smith’s who loved and accepted him as their own. Tarae also met and formed a brotherhood with “Bunn” Elliott, the God father of his children and that bond will live on forever.

If you where fortunate enough to get to know Tarae you would know how he could be loud as a lion or quite as a church mouse depending on the mood you catch him in. He enjoyed being the life of the party and joke around, but boss everyone at the same time.

While in Durham Tarae was employed by Woodall Electric as an electrician’s helper, Interior Distributors as a laborer and Adams Product Brick Yard as a laborer also. O1 also made trapper of the year four times in a row.

Along with his mother, sister and children Tarae leaves to mourn his brother and sister cousins Marvin, Kevin, Sean and Charla Wells, who where raised along with him like siblings, and Anthony “Mook” Frederick.

Tarae was proceeded in death by his loving and devoted grandparents Willa Mae (affectionately known as Meme) and Frank Mills. And his uncle Charles Wells and brother cousin Allen Wells.

Tarae also leaves to mourn a host of friends & family who he will forever live on in their hearts.
