Derrick Elliott Toomer, Sr

Derrick Elliott Toomer, age 69 departed peacefully from this life on September 7, 2024 at Duke Hock Family Pavilion surrounded by his loved ones. He was born May 2nd, 1955 in Durham NC to parents James Elliott and Pauline Toomer.

Derrick, known by family as “Deb” and self-titled “number 8” was a 1973 graduate of Hillside High School. He was employed with Durham Public Schools for over 30 years as a Custodian and Maintenance worker, eventually earning his beloved role as supervisor at Parkwood Elementary. “Mr. Toomer” was well known in his community and touched the lives of many. He lived his life to the fullest through enjoying simple pleasures such as being active outdoors, biking, and spending quality time with family and friends. There is one guarantee if you were in Derrick’s presence; positive energy and contagious laughter. Most importantly, he was a wonderful husband, father, brother and he cherished the various other roles he carried.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Paulette T. Thorpe.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret Toomer; two sons: Tremaine Jacobs and Derrick Toomer Jr; three daughters: Latarsha Toomer, Monica Toomer and Angela Bowens, all of Durham, NC; three sisters: Johnnie Marie Toomer, Gloria Tyson (Vernon) Carol Harris all of Durham, NC; six brothers: James Toomer (Dorma) of Gastonia, NC; Kenneth Toomer (Donna) of San Antonio, TX; Cleveland Toomer, Danny Toomer (Myiesha), Tracey Toomer all of Durham, NC; Tyrone Toomer of Kennesaw, GA; four grandchildren:Tremia Jacobs, Keshaunna Hodge (El’Mario), Kevin Leathers Jr. and Kenyon Leathers all of Durham, NC; six great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
