Obituary for Mrs. Carolyn J. Turrentine-Bridges

Mrs. Carolyn J. Turrentine-Bridges, age 80, of Durham, NC, peacefully transitioned on August 24, 2025, at Duke University Hospital.

Carolyn was born on March 30, 1945, in Durham, NC, to the Late Leatrice and Mary L. Turrentine and grew to embody strength, grace, and a vibrant spirit. A proud graduate of Hillside High School, Class of 1963, Carolyn went on to dedicate over 25 years of service to Duke University.

A faithful and devoted member of Mt. Calvary United Church of Christ, she served her church family as an usher and shared her gifts in many groups including singing with the V.C., Penny Saving Club, and Cheek Club. Carolyn was also an active member of the Elks Lodge - Duke and Dutches Social Club, and the Eastern Stars. Her voice and presence lifted spirits, her service uplifted her community, and her love of people left a lasting mark on all who knew her.

Carolyn was never one to sit still—she gave her time, talent, and energy to many organizations. Carolyn truly loved life—especially shopping. SHE WAS A DIVA! Those who knew her best will fondly remember her sense of style, her lively spirit, and her honesty—she always told it like it was. Even in her final days, Carolyn embraced joy in the simple things she loved. WE ALL KNOW SHE LOVED PACE!

She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Bridges; one son, Anthony Evans; one sister, Shirley Rogers; four brothers; and four grandchildren.

Carolyn leaves to cherish her memory her beloved children: Katherine Pegram, Kychia Evans, Milton Evans, and Rafael Evans, all of Durham, NC; grandchildren: Nekia Evans, Alisha Evans, Shalonda Evans, Raquel Evans, Rainnah Evans, Jessica McCullough, Stephon Dixon, James Pegram Jr., Greg Evans, Xavier Evans, Travon Williams and Unique Jackson; God-daughters: Rev. Tanya Best and Shelly Tucker, along with a host of great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, relatives, and dear friends.

Her life will be celebrated on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, at 12:00 PM at Mt. Calvary United Church of Christ, 1715 Athens Ave, Durham, NC 27707.

Carolyn’s legacy is one of love, family, faith, and a joyful spirit that will live on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know her.
